It's best to carry out testicular self-examination after a warm bath or shower. Warmth relaxes your scrotum, making it easier to feel anything abnormal. Hold the scrotum in the palm of your hand. Use your fingers and thumb to examine each testicle.
You should feel for:
- Lumps or swellings
- Anything unusual
- Differences between the testicles
If you find a lump, see your GP right away. Other conditions can cause lumps or swellings, and most lumps are non-cancerous. But it's important you get your doctor to check anything unusual as soon as possible - if it's testicular cancer, it will spread if it's not stopped by treatment. Waiting and hoping won't fix anything.
When in doubt, get it checked out - if only for peace of mind!
